Australia customs are particularly thorough in requiring all personal affects shipments to be fully inspected and often it is required for the importer to be present during this process.

Australia has among the strongest quarantine measures anywhere in the world.

Quarantine has the power to re-export contaminated machinery. All imported machinery requires a permit to import issued by Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS).

It is a condition of the permit that machinery arrives in a clean state Food, plant material and animal products from overseas - including many common souvenirs - could introduce some of the world's most serious pests and diseases into Australia, devastating our valuable agriculture and tourism industries and unique environment.
